Perhaps the problem that should be targeted would be how to maintain an economic system that increases aggregate human prosperity when AI "democratizes expertise" such that many traditional middle and upper middle class jobs can be automated.

This is a very clever strategy on the part of IBM, and kudos to whoever decided to give the challenge approach a try. Well-done grand challenges can be superb innovation motivators, especially when the prize is a cool $5M!
