Re: 180nm + 22 nm in the same brand new fab ?

Yes, they can fit in same 300mm fab. But some 180 nm customers might insist on matching to 200 mm baseline process.

You're right , but the wafer size is not a factor that will make them fail or succeed.

To the contrary . 300 mm is probably much better to succeed.

the us workers also need to look at their own problems. the chinese workers won't eat much less than their us counterpart. most of them would ride a $50 bike to work in the morning. which is just way more GREENER.

So this whole shift of job location is part of natural selection. the fit will survive. those use bikes to commute will consume less energy and get healthier at the same time.

Not even the same wafer size, historically.

I feel also really sorry for the former IBMers but I talked to some of the Burlington plant and they saw their transfer to GloFo as something good as they were just transfered .

Does somebody know how many design wins Glofo has on 22FDX , its 22 nm FD-SOI technology ?

The new FAB in China is planned to do 180 nm and then 22 nm ?
Does-it make sense ? These 2 nodes do not need the same litho tools.
180 nm uses oxide in back-end while 22 nm uses low K oxide. The list of differences and the different tools between these 2 nodes (separates by 5 other nodes 130,90,65,45 and 32nm) is big.

Could not agree more. Have you read the glassdoor reviews? I think the place is in big trouble. The Mideast investors must be getting sick of that. Wrapping wafers in dollars as they go out the door. The folks I really feel sorry for are the IBM teams. The ones who are still there anyway. I was reading one glassdoor comment that said the 7nm is all talk. There is no chance they will deliver that technology. I don't think they are capable. Just like when they failed at 14nm and had to pay samsung for a working process. I just keep waiting for the news to break that gf is belly up and being disposed of. The employees there are miserable.

Globalfoundries is clearly ran by clowns. The company lost 40 cents on every dollar of sales! It does not even compare to TSMC by any logical standard. The only comparison is that it is a complete and utter disaster relatively speaking. If it wasn't for Abu Dhabi the company would already be bankrupt.

"Expansion plans" ? Please. Just hand IBM's technology over to the Chinese and throw in a few pennies to upstate NY to hush the State; and make it look like an "expansion" - while robbing the state of it's money and technology.

Within 2 years, China will be one step away from cutting edge silicon technology. The plan is to transfer technology overseas in very short order, which will render the already meaningless NY / Albany /  Malta plants dysfunctional; By then, most of manufacturing will have already transferred over to the Chinese.

LiarFoundries.
