As one of the authors of the IHS Markit report on LPWAN that is referenced in this article, I just wanted to give some context to the rankings that are mentioned. The particular forecast that is linked in the article is for public connections, not total connections. Since 100% of Sigfox connections are public and they have a significant time-to-market advantage over Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1, they lead our forecast for public connections. However, the picture is different for total connections, inclusive of private networks such as those deployed by utilities for smart meter connectivity. LoRaWAN is very popular in private networks and so they are forecast to be the leader in total connections when all types of LPWAN networks are accounted for.

We do expect Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 to be leaders in LPWAN connections, but they are late to market and that puts them at a disadvantage that will be hard to overcome in the short term. Recent developments - many of which are mentioned in this article - are making us even more bullish on Cat-NB1 and Cat-M1 and that will likely be reflected in an updated edition of the LPWAN report that we are working on currently.
