Cannon Lake would not offer much in desktop, it's a shrink but they can't squeeze much more out of this same core that's been around since 2011 and unlikely that they can push clocks higher. They can add more cores ofc. That is , if Cannon Lake desktop doesn't get canceled. 10nm seems troubled, desktop is a large enough die and maybe they just go Ice Lake and second gen 10nm in desktop- unless Ice Lake is delayed too.

For AMD, if risk production for 12nm starts only in Q1 or H1, that's rather late for Pinnacle Ridge so maybe they stick with 14nm , higher clocks and some SoC level gains as that's good enough. 12nm in desktop would be a weird choice as the timing doesn't fit, they need Pinnacle Ridge in H1 2018 followed by Matisse with Zen 2 on 7nm, likely as soon as early 2019. They could use 12nm in laptop APUs with Picasso, the Raven Ridge followup in late 2018/early 2019 and that buys them a year to get Navi(next gen GPU) ready for 7nm APUs.
