Yes, one veteran pilot at the event made the point that for aviators "drone" means a dumb target. Thus insiders prefer UAS/UAV while the mass market--including the conference organizers--have adopted drone as the generic term.

Having been in the aerial surveillance industry for nearly 30 years, I'd like other professionals to understand the difference between a drone and an UAV/UAS.   The UAV/UAS is an unmanned aerial system can be defined by its high end endurance (hours vs minutes) created by industrial/military quality components and used for ISR purposes.   A drone, on the other hand, is merely a toy by comparison ... best defined as entry level UAV for home use
