S parameter is a must for designs at above 3 Gbps (or 1.5 GHz).  It's good to use S parameters for designs between 1 and 3 Gbps (or 0.5 to 1.5 GHz).

Very interesting methodology.  At what speed do I need to start thinking about a new method to handle S parameters?

Circuit and system designs start from SPICE simulation.  Starting in 1970's, SPICE only had lumped element models.  Not until 2000's did HSPICE have frequency-dependent lossy transmission line models.  Now in 2010's, engineers need more accurate models (in the form of S parameters) for ALL multi-gigabit designs.  S parameters are still a novelty to many designers.  Easy-to-use mobile-apps-like SI software comes in handy for EEs to create better designs in shorter time.

@Edward: Interesting approach.  What percentage of designs fall into this category?

I'm not sure -- but I'll ask the folks from the company to comment here.
