Junko, NFC is already in most medium/high-end Android phones. What is not common is the secure element, critical for mobile payment and transit apllications.

That is because carriers have been very active banning the secure elements on the phones they sell. They want to force the use of the SIM cards. They can't do that to Apple and Samsung.

This alliance could pave the way for secure payment systems, carrier independent. That gives customers fexibility to choose providers without losing their NFC payment apps.

I have been covering NFC for a long time...but I find this partnership almost a stroke of genius. The combination of the two companies could finally move NFC in everyone's smartphone.
