Actually it can also take up quite a bit of time. Our BOMs give both the part number and the manufacturer and I frequently get calls from our subs that the part is "obsolete" since they cannot find the original manufacturer.

And then there is a further complication- after the takeover the new owners change the part numbering system (even ever so slightly) and then I get the same panicky call.

I know it's a company-eats-company world out there, but I've found I don't like change -- trying to keep up with who bought who makes my head hurt (said Max, sadly)
