I see from your profile that you work at Xilinx.  Does that have anything to do with you liking them?

The FPGA selected for the Amazon AWS EC2 F1 FPGA machine instances https://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/f1/, the UltraScale+ XCVU9P, must be in the short list of best FPGAs of 2016.

As for "heaven only knows ...", it took a team of one about three weeks part-time to retarget a 10x5(x8) tile 400 RISC-V core multiprocessor on an XCKU040 to a 30x7(x8) tile 1680 RISC-V core design, with 26 MB on-die SRAM, running on a 1.2 M 6-LUT XCVU9P on a Xilinx VCU118. See "GRVI Phalanx joins The Kilocore Club" http://fpga.org/2017/01/12/grvi-phalanx-joins-the-kilocore-club/.

I too am a fan of the Xilinx UltraScale+ devices -- but biggest isn't necessarily synonymous with best -- it depends on what you want the FPGA to do and in what application.
