You do that too? I thought I was the only one. I really like wandering around the now few-and-far-between little mom-and-pop hardware stores -- in which case I often pick up things that look like them might be useful on day on the basis that I'll probably never be able to find them again in the future LOL

I'm not a mechanical engineer either. My usual approach to such problems is to wander the aisles of my local hardware store and peer into the boxes of miscellaneous fasteners etc. in search of something that looks useful for whatever project I'm working on. I've also been known to enlist the assistance of the hardware store employees. This works better at a smaller store where they are more likely to offer to help.
