I am pretty sure they do it, but a good test-procedure plan and documentation assumes nothing and defines everything, even the very obvious.

Imaging and synchrotrons

While a synchroton might do the job, they are found at national labs such as Argonne and they are billon-dollar facilities. Plus, you have to wait in time to use them.

Synchrotrons have also been used to 3D image IC to look for fakes. Engineers are working on  "tabletop" imaging system called RAVEN. I'll be posting an article on EDN with the technical details in the coming weeks. A teaser version will appear here.
