Yep, it is amazing how close those surviving trees were. More fire pics here, it really was blazing. Some trees behind the building clearly burned too:
In the middle of the forest, a forest fire doesn't leave much in the way of green trees. In this case, the buildings that burned were ignited by burning embers, either from the main fire or from other burning buildings nearby.
My parents used to have a cabin in a small community in a northern California forest. I visited shortly after the forest fire burned it down. Standing in the ashes where the cabin had stood, I was amazed to see green trees all around. A hunderd yards away, at the edge of the main fire, there was no green.
