@sranje: Yeah there may be more subtext here than usual. All the data center giants need to make their networks less expensivve to build and maintain. The SDN way is in moving more functions to high level programs on x86 servers and off from proprietary switches with closed protocols. Amazon is pretty quiet about how it handles these issues. Google occasionally gives limited glimpses into what its doing. Facebook has tried to leverage open source approaches and rally vendors to support them both for its servers with the Open Compute Project and for networks with TIP. In addition, Facebook like other Web giants needs ever more eyeballs to grow its ad base. Connecting ROW markets is one way to do that. This is where carriers and Facebook share a similar agenda of less expensive telecom gear. Is this helping?

For example, Skyworks just announced SKY66288-11 - a new power amplifier for its Small Cell portfolio.

Qualcomm, NXP (Freescale), TI, BRCM - several other, compete in small cell (often indoor, including residential) base-stations -- what would Facebook "open system" bring to the market?   SDN architecture?

$1K price -- what are current best prices for a small cell basestations?

The article is potentially interesting but it is somewhat open-ended.  Your audience include non-expert "dumb" readers... like me  ;-))

Many thanks

Thank you.  Could you perhaps clarify how Facebook benefits -- especially in competition with Amazon and Google? Many thanks
